Children of God

by Vicky Munro

“But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.”
John 1:12, NLT

Recently I have been pondering on being a child of God and being in God’s family, lots of sisters and brothers in Christ, and how amazing it is to know that I’m never alone because I’m a child of God.  When we become believers we are accepted as his heir, a child of the most high, forever loved unconditionally by our Heavenly Father.

I went on a bible search for scriptures that say we are his children and I’d like to share some with you.

“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.” And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering.”  Romans 8:14-15, 17 NLT

This verse spoke to me so deeply, that we are not slaves, we don’t have to live in fear, we are together with Christ Jesus, heirs of Gods glory, and how amazing that we can called God abba father!  We are in his family.

I went on to read 1 John the whole book, how it talks about us being a child and Gods love for us and also how we are to love one another, isn’t that how a family should be? It also made me stop and look at myself too, not only question do I accept that I’m a child of God but also how and do I love others as God calls us too. I have to confess that there have been people that I have struggled to love, brothers and sisters that I have perhaps judged, and pushed them away at arm’s length, not loved them as I should. So although God has really spoken to me about being his child I realised that I also have a part to play by being his child.

My question to you today is do you accept that you are a child of God? And are you living as a child of God and loving others as we’ve been taught?

I’d like to share some scriptures for you to meditate on and encourage you to ask God to show you his love and any areas that you may need to look at.

“Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.”  Ephesians 1:4-5 NLT

“So now you Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with all of God’s holy people. You are members of God’s family.”  Ephesians 2:19 NLT

“And I will be your Father, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.””  2 Corinthians 6:18 NLT
