An Antidote to Worry

We were considering having an improvement on our home. We received a phone call out of the blue from a large firm who did the work we were considering. The next day a representative of the firm arrived to show the products and, foolishly, we paid a deposit and signed for the work to be done. During this process I was uneasy, feeling we were being pressurised into something that we needed time to process.

The feeling of unease increased, so we wrote to the firm to say we were cancelling the order, only to receive a letter from their legal department telling us we had to pay one third of the contract price. We were unable to get hold of the contact person we were given and the situation became more troubling. After a restless night the text for this seed came to mind. What’s the good of worrying? It’s futile. Having proved God so many times I knew we had to wait for Him to act for us. That’s what He did, but I learned a few important lessons.

Firstly, the things we decide without taking God into account take us into circumstances that aren’t chosen by God, therefore we worry.

Secondly, the one thing that keeps us from the possibility of worrying is to always bring God into the decisions we make. This means putting Him at the centre even when we’re making practical decisions. He’s interested in all areas of our lives. We’re human beings, not just spiritual people. Above all we’re His children. We have a Father who’s gracious, tender and compassionate, and, despite our folly at times, He’s ready and willing to rescue us.

Sometimes we sense that we’re in a situation where we’re working against evil. God is greater than evil. He’s able to protect us and work our folly for our good and His own honour.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your compassion and faithfulness. In sending the Lord Jesus to die on the cross You’ve demonstrated the depths of Your love and mercy. Forgive our foolish ways, and glorify Your name in our lives today, for the sake of Your son. Amen.
