All I Know

Have you ever had a problem in trying to explain what God has done in your life to someone who doesn’t believe in God at all? It’s like two people trying to communicate, but both speaking different languages. You know how real it is to you, but to them it’s incomprehensible. You may leave that conversation feeling somewhat inadequate at not being able to get the message across. Don’t worry, you aren’t alone.

The verses we started with form part of an incredible miracle Jesus performed in a rather bizarre way to heal a man born blind. He had never seen colours, shapes, the sun, moon and stars, flowers, trees, animals or anyone, including his own parents. Then, in an instant he could see. You would think that everyone would rejoice with him. Well most of them did, but not the Pharisees, who were filled with rage that Jesus healed on the Sabbath. They interrogated the man and tried to trick him. I just love his simple answer to all their questions, “All I know is that I used to be blind, but now I can see.”

That simple answer was enough to confound them. He had no deep theological or medical answer to what happened to him. Three simple words summed it up for him. “All I know.” You may never be able to adequately explain to people what happened that caused you to give your life to Jesus. You may never be able to answer their questions about how you were healed and set free. But, like the man born blind we can all say with conviction, “All I know is …”, and we add the words that signify the miracle wrought in our body, soul and spirit, initiated by a personal encounter with the living Lord Jesus. Don’t worry. That’s enough. We leave the rest to God.

Many years ago, I knew someone I was really keen to witness to. I knew his wife was a Christian, but he was an atheist. One evening, at my house with just the two of us present, I tried to challenge him about Jesus. However, he was far more intelligent than I was and ran rings around my arguments. I was left feeling so inadequate and a failure.

Some years later, I discovered that he’d had an incredible encounter with God and was instantly saved. I later met him and talked to him about it. He remembered our conversation all those years before. In a way he was like the man born blind. Then he couldn’t see the spiritual truths I was trying to convey, but now his eyes had been opened and we could both say “All I know is that I used to be blind, but now I can see.” That may not be sufficient for those who doubt, but it’s enough for God, and I will continue to tell them “All I know is”. Are you willing to do the same?

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for saving me and totally changing my life around. I know only too well that I don’t have the answers to those who don’t or won’t believe. What I do have is the personal experience of an encounter with You, the Living God. My answer to everyone who will try to convince me I’m mistaken is “All I know is that I used to be blind, but now I can see”. And I leave it with You for that to be enough. Amen.
