Abundance

by Ron Scurfield

Now six stone water jars had been set there.. Each could hold from twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus told the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” So they filled them to the brim. “Now draw some out,” He said, “and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine.
John 2:6-9, NIV

Our God is a God of abundance. There`s no limit to the grace and favour He wants to bestow upon us. Like a loving father, He just wants to give His children the best. He promises to meet all our needs through His son, Jesus Christ, through whom our hunger is satisfied.

God`s riches are limitless, stored up in heaven as an inheritance waiting to be claimed. We`re led into His banqueting Hall where a table is already prepared for us, and we’re showered by His love. ‘No eye has seen, no ear has heard and no human mind has conceived the things God has prepared for those who love him’ (1 Corinthians 2:9).

Material riches as the world sees them don’t create happiness. People who have everything they need still seem to strive for more. They are able to buy anything they want, but it’s not enough to satisfy. Those who believe that godliness is a means to financial gain have been robbed of the truth (1 Timothy 6:5). The reality is that contentment is found only through true godliness.

Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10). This is the abundant life which comes only through a relationship with Christ Himself. With Jesus there is the Spirit-filled life, a life fully tuned to God, a life where we are maintained by God’s provision, and the promise of everything we need, where we have peace, joy and fulfilment and are at one with the Father, `..in accordance with the riches of God`s grace that he lavished on us` (Ephesians 1:7-8). For this we don`t have to wait till we get to heaven. We can have it now.

‘Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life’ (1 John 5:12). This is the key. Life abundant is in Jesus, and through Him, the Father and the Kingdom of God.

How can we have Jesus in all His fullness when we still have worldly values to contend with? ‘I am crucified with Christ’ (Galatians 2:20). The passions of the world have been done away with on the cross. When we look to the greater prize, and what it means in terms of life and godliness, we become alive, not in the material realm, but in the spiritual.

We become dead to self, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. He becomes our everything, and, as we place our life in His hands, He leads us triumphantly through this wilderness which man has created, and on to the promised land. The way may be hard, but joy and fulfilment outweigh all the obstacles and our lives are transformed. ‘We went through fire and water, but you brought us to a place of abundance’ (Psalm 66:12).

Prayer: Thank You, Lord, for all the blessings You shower upon us, even in this life. We know we’re secure in Your love. With Jesus as our Saviour, we march on towards the goal You have set before us, with hope and peace and all we need, confident in the abundance of Your life, love and blessings, now and for evermore. Amen.
