A New Perspective
by Jim Person
While on a trip to the Netherlands recently I helped teach my daughter to ride a bicycle. She’s working on overcoming things she has difficulty with, and on her list this summer was learning how to ride a bike. Although she was afraid of falling she told me she didn’t want to let fear rule her life anymore, and she was willing to put her trust in me, her father. So we began with her sitting on the bike and me holding it, and helping her get the feel of balancing on the bike, and becoming familiar with the way you sit, brake, pedal and so forth. I had the help of a friend, who took turns with me on running along beside her as she pedalled.
Even though I took her through the steps, this friend gave her the new perspective necessary for her to actually ride. His advice, along with my help, gave her the keys to putting it all together. He told her to look where she was going to and not at her feet, the bike, or where she was. I watched, and as she used this new perspective, she was able to balance herself, and ride her bike.
As I pondered this, I saw how pivotal it is to our walk with God. So often we get caught up with the task at hand and don’t look where we’re going to. Or we start looking at our problem, where we are, and don’t look up to Jesus and where we need to go to.
Maybe you’re struggling in your situation, and even though you’ve prayed you’re still not going forward. My brothers and sisters, until we get up and go, focus on what brings balance in our life, and look ahead, we’ll remain stuck in our circumstances, even though we’ve set our lives in order.
Jesus is our source of strength in all things. He’s our example; by which we measure ourselves. He’s also our greatest encourager as we start going down the path we have before us. He’s always there, never leaving, never giving up on us! As we begin to go, He’s there helping us, each step or pedal we take.
Today’s the day for overcoming that obstacle in your life, as you stop looking at where you are, and begin to look at where you’re going, trusting Jesus to be with you. He’ll bring balance and a new perspective to your life as you step out in faith.
Prayer: Lord, help me to look to You and not at my situation. I want to be an overcomer, and I know, as You help stabilize me in my journey, I’ll go where I need to in You. Thank You for Your hand on me, and, even if I begin to wobble, I know you’ll bring me to that place of balance. Amen.
