When I Think of You

Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God.
Philippians 1:3, NIV

In Philippians 1:3, Paul expresses deep gratitude for the believers in Philippi. His thoughts of them lead him to be thankful to God. This phrase and Paul’s response got me reflecting.

There are some people who, when we think of them, bring us joy, comfort, contentment, and gratitude. Yet, there are also those who, when they come to mind, stir feelings of fear, sadness, anxiety, rejection, sorrow, or even anger. Why do certain people make us feel thankful, while others don’t? Our character, our attitude, how we speak, how we treat others, how we conduct ourselves, how we interact with others, and the things we do all shape the way people remember us.

What about you and me? What do others feel when they think of us? What kind of impression do we leave in their minds?

In 1 John 2:6 we find this challenge: “Whoever claims to live in God must live as Jesus did.” If we truly aim to live as Jesus lived, our lives will leave a lasting, Christ-like impression on others. We will show compassion and care, treat others with respect, and show grace, kindness, and mercy, just as Jesus did. When we live this way, our lives become a reflection of Jesus to others. They will see and hear Jesus through us. We will be His hands and feet. They will see His tenderness, gentleness, and warmth.

And when people experience such a reflection, they will, like Paul, become thankful to God for the blessing of our lives touching theirs. Our Christ-reflecting lives will lead others to give thanks to God for us.

So today, let’s ask ourselves this. Am I thankful, like Paul, for the people God has placed around me, my friends, my family, my community, and all those who are encouraging me and who are a source of blessing in my life? Let’s take a moment to think of one person we are thankful for and lift them up in prayer.

May we be living like Jesus, so that, when others think of us, they too will give thanks to God for having met us. And if there are moments when we’ve caused hurt or sorrow to others, may we repent and seek His forgiveness.

Let’s close with a prayer based on Philippians 1:9–11.
