Oh Baby!
by Tracy Bankuti
Isn’t it encouraging to know that even the men who walked intimately with Jesus missed the mark on numerous occasions?
Getting it wrong is an opportunity for growth in God’s kingdom; a kingdom ruled by a gracious King where there need be no fear of failure. Our Father is certainly aware of our failures; however, He doesn’t see us in the light of that failure, only in the light of His Son Jesus!
Failing, does not make you a failure any more than succeeding makes you a success, this is an intentionally deceptive illusion of the evil one, who is the false father. His desire is to lay a counterfeit identity on you according to the values and ideals of the world around us.
Failures and successes aside, our true identity is, “Child of God”! Everything the disciples had learned in their world needed to be challenged by Jesus, but not in a contentious way. His teaching brought truth and a new reality and still does. Jesus values life because He is the giver and sustainer of that life. In God’s Kingdom babies have worth, not because they are able to contribute to society, but simply because their intrinsic value comes from the One who created them.
God’s choice to stoop down to the lowly position of a human baby is the greatest humility! He could have appeared in any human form, but He chose to come as an infant, totally helpless and dependant, completely vulnerable taking upon Himself the weakest position. “But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.” (1 Corinthians 1:27)
The Bible gives us examples of numerous babies who God used to change the world. Moses the greatest leader in Israel, Samuel the greatest prophet, Isaac and John the Baptist miraculously born of aged parents and used powerfully of God, and our Lord Jesus who is the Saviour of the world. No wonder the enemy of our souls has since ancient times been, and is still, trying to destroy life at its very beginning. An innocent baby is a great threat to his dark kingdom. Jesus wanted His disciples to understand the true value of a human life according to His great Kingdom. There is so much we can learn from the humble innocence of a baby.
At this time of year, we will be celebrating and thinking about Jesus’ coming to earth as a baby. What perfect trust between Father, Son and Spirit! Oh, that we could come to trust our Father so completely!
