Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach.

Deuteronomy 30:11, NIV

Most sensible people appreciate and obey the words of command – KEEP CLEAR! - written on a notice board at the top of a dangerous cliff, warning of imminent danger if they step any nearer to the edge and therefore discover, in effect, a negative aspect of the law of gravity.

It’s sad that so many people in this world do not appreciate or obey God’s commands in His Word, warning of imminent danger if we step into sinful life-choices and therefore discover the negative aspects of His spiritual laws. After all, God created all that is seen and unseen, all that exists both physically and spiritually, all the physical laws of the universe, including the law of gravity, and all the spiritual laws of the universe, including the law of sowing and reaping.

God established all these laws for our benefit, for humankind to flourish in the world that He has created for us. In order to help us keep right with His spiritual laws in particular, He has given us straightforward commands in His Word, now expressed within a new divine covenant, through the life and teaching of Jesus.

God’s spiritual laws essentially explain how His universe works in regard to the eternal realm. His commands, not least through the teaching of Jesus, explain how to benefit from those laws. These instructions are given as commands rather than advice because, as with a cliff edge notice, disobedience is really very serious.
