Your Value to God

by Dotty Cockcroft

Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
Luke 12:6-7, NIV

In a Christian meeting, which I attended recently, the person speaking pulled out a new, crisp £20 note and held it up for all to see, asking “What is it and what is it worth?”. Of course everyone knew, and called out the answer. Then the speaker proceeded to screw it up into a tight ball and asked again “What is it worth now?” Everyone agreed that it was still worth £20. Then he asked what it would be worth if it was torn in two, and everyone agreed it would still be worth £20.

What was the point of all this? Well the point was that, no matter what has happened to us, even if we’ve been crushed and broken, we’re still just as valuable to God as we would be if we were all crisp, new and perfect. No-one is perfect, but, because you’re so precious to Him, God even knows how many hairs are on your head. ‘Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows’ (Luke 12:6-7).

Think of the godliest person you know. They may be more intimate with God, and more obedient than you are, but they’re not more valuable. Now think of the most ungodly person you know. They may be far from God, but they’re no less valuable to Him than you are.

If you’ve been crushed and broken, please know that you’re valuable to God, and there’s nothing you can do to become more valuable to Him. If you walk with Jesus through your journey of healing into wholeness, you’ll become more intimate with God. You’ll also have more peace and joy, but you’ll never be more valuable to Him than you are today.

Prayer: Thank You, Father God, that You value me so much that Jesus was prepared to give up His life to rescue me, so I can have relationship with You, and know Your love for me. Help me to really know this, and walk every day in the truth of it. Amen.
