She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: You are the God who sees me, for she said, I have now seen the One who sees me.
Genesis 16:13, NIV

There is a significant difference between somebody looking at you and somebody seeing you.

To be looked at can be uncomfortable. You can feel you are being measured and weighed. You may long for the person to stop looking at you.

When somebody sees you, they are recognising the true you. They understand you. Many people are struggling with the fact that nobody really sees them. They have become invisible. They feel they are considered a part of the furniture. They are taken for granted. They may be seen for what they do but not for who they are.

In Genesis we read about Sarai`s maidservant Hagar. She was being used by Sarai and Abram, to create an heir, as they were childless. Hagar was never meant to become an equal member of the family. She was just a tool in their plans. As a precious individual, created by God, we can say she was invisible to Abram and Sarai.

When Hagar understood she had become pregnant, she started to despise her mistress. Sarai got angry and she mistreated Hagar, who fled. All three persons in the story were behaving in an ungodly way. Our focus today is on Hagar. She was deeply wounded, but wounding is never an excuse for sin. She had been despised and reacted by despising those who despised her.

In the wilderness, the angel of the Lord met her. He told her to go back to her mistress (repentance) but He also gave her a promise: “I will so increase your descendants that they will be too numerous to count” (Genesis 16:10). She was met with both grace and truth.

For the first time, she met someone that saw her.

She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me” (Genesis 16:13).

God sees you. He understands how it has been, and how it is, to be you. He knows every detail about your life, and he doesn´t just ‘look at’ you, He sees you. He meets you with grace and truth. He wants to restore you to the person He meant you to be from the beginning.
