Seeds of the Kingdom

Whose perspective?

by Sue Wright

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
Isaiah 55:8-9, NIV

The view from our office window is varied, depending on the weather. This morning, as I write, I see sheep grazing in the fields, some trees and a cloudy sky. On a brighter day, looking out of the same window I will see the sheep, fields, trees and very clearly some high fells in the middle distance, which in reality are only a few miles away. Although I can’t see the fells today, I know they’re there. It’s just that the perspective has changed.

I have to remind myself constantly that God’s perspective is different to mine – what I see in any given situation is limited. I see the things and people around me, but I don’t know what’s going on in the lives of others, I don’t know God’s plans and I can’t know the future. So when I’m puzzled or confused, questioning God about what’s happening, or when I make decisions or judgements, I’m going on extremely limited (sometimes wrong!) information. It’s a matter of trusting God because His ways are better than mine, and I don’t see the whole picture.

This is a simple truth with profound implications in day-to-day life. It’s a challenge to let God be God and to trust Him implicitly, because of course He is trustworthy. So, whatever challenges you face today, remember that God’s ways are higher than ours.

Prayer:Dear Lord, please forgive me for the countless times I do, say and think things from my own understanding. I forget that Your perspective is different to mine and that You see things from the beginning of time to eternity. Thank You that I am safe with You, and You know everything. Please help me to remember that You are God. Amen.
