Jesus welcomed the people, taught them about the Kingdom of God and healed those in need. Luke 9:11

Where to Find Spiritual Healing

by David Cross

See to it, then, that no one enslaves you by means of the worthless deceit of human wisdom, which comes from the teachings handed down by human beings and from the ruling spirits of the universe, and not from Christ.
Colossians 2:8, NASB

Countless holistic therapies claim to bring healing to the body, mind and spirit. In their promotion, an extraordinary array of words and phrases are used to encourage us to believe in the efficacy of the treatments. I can apparently have ‘my energy centres realigned where they have fallen out of harmony’, I can find ‘a new attunement to my spirit’, I can experience ‘restoration of my harmonic resonance’, I can be helped ‘to connect with something larger than myself’, I can have ‘my spiritual pathways unblocked’, and I can connect with ‘nature’s living energy’.

At best, most of the phrases used are just meaningless but, at worst, they are highly deceptive, based not on any science but on a miscellany of beliefs concerning unquantifiable energies and forces apparently existing in and around us. The Word of God takes a completely different approach to spiritual repair. Jesus certainly agrees that we are all in need of healing, but His answer is for us to acknowledge His Kingship in our lives: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven” (Matthew 5:3).

Having researched over many years the alternative therapies that offer spiritual restoration, I have not found one that says that human sin is the cause of spiritual damage. Not one suggests that our confession and repentance are the starting places for healing, and not one says that God’s forgiveness is the true solution to our spiritual needs. In the quest for spiritual wellbeing, it seems that the world is very willing to be drawn down any pathway, apart from that which follows the One who has declared Himself to be ‘the way, the truth and the life’.

Prayer: Father God, I ask that I might have increasing discernment to avoid the seductive traps of the enemy, especially when feeling a bit desperate for a healing touch deep within my life. I choose to believe that Jesus alone provides the answer to spiritual needs, through His saving work on the cross. Amen.
