Where is Your Treasure?

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 6:21, NIV

Many happy hours have been spent by a young child (and some adults alike) searching for hidden treasure. The thought of treasure delights the imagination, for the searcher knows that something special awaits the one who finds it.

This is also true in the spiritual. From today’s scripture we learn that our treasure is the thing that commands our focus and absorbs our attention and time. Time can only be spent once, and the time we spent an hour ago, is gone forever and relegated to the pages of history. So, what has all the time in our past been spent on? What was it that occupied the majority of it? Is the Lord our treasure? Does he occupy our waking thoughts, or are we preoccupied with other good things, at the expense of the best?
The Bible is very clear on this matter, for where we find our treasure, that is where our heart is. In other words, that is what we love the most.

It was Jesus who first came to earth seeking for the treasure He had made, but which had been stolen, lost and desecrated by the enemy through the art of deception. Christ paid with His life for the value of the human soul.

He gave His life blood for the joy that was set before Him, that we might be ‘a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people’ (1 Peter 2:9). We are His purchased possession. He who is the King of kings and Lord of lords sets His focus on us! You and I matter to Him.

Then, having redeemed us by the shedding of his blood, and having dealt with the sin question, He invested the treasure of Himself in all those who would receive Him. The bible tells us that ‘we have this treasure in earthen vessels that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us’ (2 Corinthians 4:7). We are clay jars of dust, with the treasure of the Divine Himself, living within us. ‘Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world’ (1 John 4:4).

So, He who is the divine treasure of heaven and earth, sought and redeemed the human soul, and then invests of Himself within it, when that person receives Him.

So, when the enemy tries to devalue your worth and steal your identity, remember who you belong to. Equally, ask yourself the question, “Who or what do I value above all else?” Who do I love the most? Is our Lord Jesus as much our treasure as we are His?

Prayer: Dear Lord, help me each day to dig deep and seek the treasure and wealth that is You and You alone. For in You are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. Help me in all my choosing to choose Your way, for Your ways are higher than our ways and Your thoughts than our thoughts. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
