Welcome to Your New Inheritance

by David Cross

… knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.
1 Peter‬ ‭1:18-19,NASB

Whatever financial inheritance we may have experienced, or not, from the past members of our earthly family, there has also been a spiritual inheritance coming from them. At least some of that legacy may not been at all helpful to us. The traits that we carry can include pride, deception and rejection, for example, and these can bring significant dysfunction into our daily lives.

But there is very good news for followers of Jesus. Spiritually, we have been grafted into a completely new family. Alongside Jewish Messianic believers, Gentile believers become heirs to a spiritual inheritance that goes right back to Abraham. Through the shed blood of Jesus, we can be redeemed from all the passed-on bad traits that have gripped us, coming into a completely new way of life. The old legacy can be replaced with humility, truthfulness and acceptance.

This is a supernatural process, requiring our acknowledgement of the sin in our own lives and in that of our forefathers, forgiving them for the spiritual legacy of iniquity that they have bequeathed to us. We need to receive God’s forgiveness for the past choices we have made to walk in the same sinful traits. We do not any longer have to be a ‘chip off the old block’ in past family failings, but rather we can be a redeemed and confident member of the family of God.

Prayer: Thank You, Father God, for the new family that You have given to me. I truly desire to reflect the character of this family, as shown in the nature of Jesus. I come to You for an exchange of spiritual inheritance, in His precious name. Amen.
