Unfailing Love

by Lynda Scott

“From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another. For the law was given through Moses, but God’s unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Father’s heart. He has revealed God to us.”
John 1:16-18, NLT

Sadly, we now live in a world where broken promises are common. People don’t keep their word, both in public life as well as in private lives. Trusting people has become harder than ever before. Loving people is even harder. To love is to risk loss.

Sometimes we can come to God with that kind of mind set, one that is cautious or wary, not wanting to get too involved because you’ve been hurt by people before. What if God proves to be like your experience of people, even Christians? Naturally you justify your caution, but is it truly justified?

I have good news for you. Today’s scripture from John 1 tells us that God’s character is one of unfailing love and faithfulness, and that was demonstrated in the Father giving us Jesus. Think about it – unfailing love and faithfulness. No broken promises, no cheating, no betrayal. Jesus Himself is unfailing love and faithfulness. He won’t mistreat you. As you walk with Him, from His abundance, you’ll receive one gracious blessing after another.

No, we haven’t seen God, but Jesus is near to the Father’s heart, and is Himself a part of God. If you want to know if you can trust God, really trust God, look at Jesus’ life, as recorded in the Bible. He’s revealed the Father God to us. As you see Jesus, you’re seeing what your Heavenly Father is like. Jesus is the kind of person that I would want supporting me. You’ll find this scripture is true. Jesus is full of unfailing love and faithfulness. Meditate on that truth this week.

Prayer: Dear Jesus, at times, I’ve been so let down by people in my world. It makes me cautious to trust again. But I want to know if You’re different. Reveal Yourself to me through Your Word, the Bible, and confirm to me that Your character is unfailing love and faithfulness, with no hidden catches. I want to know You, Jesus, and the Father, as You reveal Him. Amen.
