The Will of God

Our prayers can often become a list of our desires for God to put right all that appears to us to be out of order in this troubled world. In His humanity, even Jesus wrestled with the clash between His desire and that of His Father but, thankfully, He chose to surrender His will to that of His Father and so bring about the wonderful salvation of humanity.

True intercession is seeking to come into prophetic agreement with the will of God, both His foundational will and His specific will for today. We proclaim this regularly in the prayer that Jesus taught us: ‘Your Kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. His foundational will for all of us is clear from His Word, not least that we should forgive those who have sinned against us, confess our personal sin and receive God’s forgiveness.’

God’s specific will for today is not usually so clear, for His ways are not our ways and we can easily fall into the trap of hoping God will agree with what we think is best in any situation, just as Jesus did, albeit momentarily. This is where we need to open our hearts to whatever revelation God wants to bring us through the Holy Spirit, so that our prayer agreement with Him can truly bring about His will on earth, effecting true changes that are God’s plan and purposes.

So, I suggest it’s best for us to start in prayer by acknowledging the majesty of God, then by laying down the foundations of our forgiveness of others and our repentance of personal wrongdoing. As we do these, we can open our hearts to the prompting of the Holy Spirit as He points us towards God’s specific will for today. We may be surprised at what He shows us but, as we submit our will to His will, thus agreeing with Him, God can indeed do mighty things through our intercession.
