The Secret Things of God

by Christel Baxter

He reveals the deep and secret things; He knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with Him!
Daniel 2:22, Amplified

I made a study recently about hidden or secret things that are spoken of in God’s Word. It was by no means an exhaustive study on the topic, but the little I did discover was exciting to me!

There are two kinds of hidden or secret things: godly secrets and ungodly, or sinful, secrets. Ungodly secrets – things done in darkness – are done outside of God’s safe covering and protection, and will leave us vulnerable to the enemy of our souls, who comes to steal, kill and destroy. God loves us, and He promises to expose that which is done in darkness, not because He wants to embarrass us, but because ‘the Lord disciplines those He loves, as a father the son he delights in’ (Proverbs 3:12). His heart always is to restore us back to Himself.

However, I want to focus on ‘godly secrets’. God has given us His logos Word – the written and revealed Word, which we’re able to explore and read. But there are mysteries of God that we may never fully understand this side of heaven – things that God chooses to keep hidden. Deuteronomy 29:29 says, ‘The Lord our God has secrets known to no one. We are not accountable for them, but we and our children are accountable forever for all that He has revealed to us, so that we may obey all the terms of these instructions’. God chooses that which He wants to reveal to us. He doesn’t need our approval, neither does He need to prove Himself to us by revealing things we find difficult to fathom. He is God – the great I AM.

And yet, our wonderful God loves to come alongside us and give us glimpses of heavenly things. He loves to open our eyes to new revelations and to unveil secret things that will ignite our hearts to fear Him and love Him more. Isaiah 48:6 says, ‘Now I will tell you new things, secrets you have not yet heard’. God chooses how and when He makes known the unknown to us. Psalm 25:14 says, ‘The Lord confides in those who fear Him; He makes His covenant known to them’. When we’re in right relationship with God, and pursue intimacy with Him, He’ll entrust us with some of His beautiful ‘secrets’.

God also asks us to do some things in secret, because they have the potential to foster ungodly pride in us if we do them openly and for everyone to see. Here are three things; giving (Matthew 6:4), fasting (Matthew 6:18) and praying (Matthew 6:6). God is interested in the motive of our hearts and in rewarding us in His manner and time.

How exciting to think that God would invite us to seek out and to investigate the secrets and the mysteries of God like a beautiful treasure hunt! ‘You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart’. (Jeremiah 29:13).

Prayer: Lord, thank You so much that You choose to make Yourself known to us as Your children. Thank You that You love us enough to bring the things that are in darkness to light, so we can be in right standing with You. Amen.
