If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:8-9, NASB

There is a recognition in the hearts of many people worldwide that the human quest for healing includes a deep need for restoration to the spiritual dimension of our being. For this reason, there are countless so-called alternative or complementary therapies that are referred to as holistic, recognising the damage and interaction of the entire body, soul and spirit.

These therapies offer solutions to our needs with terms such as spiritual attunement, spiritual balancing, unblocking spiritual pathways, restoring harmonic resonance, renewed energy, and many more with similar ill-defined phrases. No doubt, the therapists are mostly well-meaning in their desire to bring health to their clients, but it is very noticeable that, of the thousands of such holistic treatments that are available, not one of them makes any reference to the biblical pathway of true spiritual restoration.

The healing ministry of Jesus makes no mention of the therapeutic terms listed above, but rather He makes it very clear that it is cleansing from the effect of sin that we need and, unless we are willing to deal with this, there is no divine pathway to spiritual healing. John summarises this fact in today’s verses. Divine healing is the restoration of God’s created order throughout our being, and the Bible tells us how to safely walk that journey under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
