The Politics of God

Jesus answered, “My Kingdom is not of this world.”
John 18:36a, NIV

As we approach another general election in the United Kingdom, I do not believe that God will be giving exclusive endorsement to a particular political party, but rather He will be observing the personal righteousness of each candidate. He is looking to establish His Kingdom through individuals of different political persuasions, if they are willing to recognise His supreme sovereignty over every nation. God’s ultimate desire is to see the fruit of His character being found in and through every life surrendered to His Son, Jesus Christ.

The structures of political authority do matter to God and we are encouraged in the Bible to pray for the leaders of nations. They certainly need that in these contentious days, and this doesn’t mean that we will necessarily agree with all their policies. However, our respect for the office they seek to hold is essential for godly order in the nation.

King Cyrus of Persia didn’t have a covenantal relationship with God, but he seems to have been open to divine leading in regard to God’s purposes for the children of Israel (Ezra 1:1, and Isaiah 45:4). In today’s world, through the leader of every nation, God will eventually fulfill His national and international plans, despite all our political ideologies. However, it’s fair to say that the journey towards these plans for humanity will be considerably less painful for both the leaders and for each of us if we all truly seek His ways with truth and grace.

Prayer: Father God, touch the hearts of prospective leaders in our nation to recognise the validity of divine order and destiny, even if their lives are not fully turned to You. And help us, the electorate, to hear Your voice in our choice of the right leaders for our nation. Amen.
