Therefore, this is what the LORD says: “If you repent, I will restore you that you may serve me; if you utter worthy, not worthless, words, you will be my spokesman. Let this people turn to you, but you must not turn to them.”
Jeremiah 15:19, NIV

An influential Christian leader in England recently declared that the established Church’s refusal to go along with changing cultural norms on marriage and relationships was leading to a radical dislocation between the Church and the culture it serves.

Do we really serve society by adjusting the Word of God to come in line with changing culture? Jesus spoke unchanging truth with infinite grace, meaning that there was neither compromise nor condemnation in His teaching. His words offended some, but delighted others. He knew that He must remain absolutely true to the instructions of His Father, for only then could He bring salvation to this needy world.

God made it clear to Jeremiah that the call to be a voice for the Lord depended on care in speaking out what was the truth of God’s Word. He was then warned that such truth might or might not cause the listeners to turn from their sinful ways, but what was most important was that Jeremiah was not to be swayed into agreement with their views.

There will always be a dislocation between what the world says is right and what God says is right, but He will never alter his Word to come in line with public opinion. What He designed to be right for humanity from the beginning of creation will remain right until the very end of time.
