Sheep

by Angela Weir

The sheep that are My own hear and are listening to My voice; and I know them, and they follow Me.
John 10: 27, AMP

Just recently we heard on the local news that a farmer had had some of his valuable sheep stolen. He had taken years to build up his flock and some thieves came in the night and stole over four hundred of them. The police reckoned that it was a very professional job and that they probably came with sheep dogs and a cattle trailer.

Sheep are not very intelligent creatures and they obviously thought they had better do what the dogs were telling them – after all their farmer, doubtless, had dogs and they were used to being moved around by them. It all must have seemed quite usual to them, apart from the fact that it was dark, and their farmer usually worked in daylight.

How important it is for us to learn to listen to our Shepherd’s voice. Jesus warns us that even the elect may be deceived by what seems right but isn’t (Matthew 24: 24), and as Derek Prince says, ‘If we believe we can’t be deceived, we’re deceived already’. We need to listen carefully and compare what we hear with the Word of God, (which cannot lie). If it doesn’t match, then we’re in danger of being deceived and it would be best to it leave well alone.

Prayer: Dearest Father, the last thing I want is to be deceived. Please help me to be alert to Your voice and not to be distracted by what seems good. Please help me to stay close to You, in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
