Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
Hebrews 13:8, NIV

We recently had the privilege of going to Oberammergau to see the Passion Play. It was a moving experience. Oberammergau is a small village in Germany which has a special history. The play dates back to 1633 when bubonic plague ravaged the village and many people died. One day, during this very devastating time, the people of Oberammergau made a promise to portray the ‘Passion, Death and Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ’ every ten years. From the moment that commitment was made no further person succumbed to the Black Death.

Since then, once a decade the people of Oberammergau have been performing the Passion Play. This year more than 500,000 people from all over the world have been drawn to one tiny village over a period of several weeks, to see re-enacted the event that changed the world.

One day our tour guide commented on the great enthusiasm of the people who see the play – some more than others. He concluded that Jesus changes, according to the character acting Him out. My immediate reply was, “The real Jesus never changes; He is always the same.”

Indeed, He cannot change because He is from everlasting to everlasting. He is timeless and unchanging, the Alpha and Omega, the same yesterday, today and forever and His touch still has its ancient power.

Jesus is one with the Father. His character does not change. He never becomes less loving, less merciful or less gracious whatever we may do. His truth does not change. It is timeless and although men may distort it, it still remains the same and it is the thing our lives must be built upon if we are to walk in obedience to Him.

His purposes are unchanging and He never needs to revise His plans. His thoughts and His ways do not change, for He is eternal. This means that if I am going to know Him more, and walk closer to Him, I need to be changed constantly so that more of the life of Jesus is seen in me.

The believer’s security in a changing and unstable world lies in this one amazing fact that, along with the Father and the Spirit, Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today and forever. And He has promised never to leave or forsake us.
