Our Need of Him

O God, you are my God; I earnestly search for you. My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water.
Psalms‬ ‭63:1,NLT

I was listening to a message recently entitled ‘I need Thee, O, I need Thee’ and it really spoke to me. Do we really see our need of God, to really need Him, or are we so self occupied and intent on going our own way, doing our own thing? Have we lost our sense of the need of God in our lives?

God longs to lead us each day and to show us what He wants us to do, but so often we can simply rush off into the day with our own agenda and if we are not careful we are busy with life, simply relying on our own independence and human efforts.

It takes humility to admit that we really do need Jesus and His help.

In Luke 7:37, we read of the woman who anointed Jesus’ feet with the expensive perfume from an alabaster jar. She knew she was a sinner, knew her need of Jesus and received His forgiveness. The Pharisee in the same story didn’t seem to recognise his need.

From the bottom of her heart, she expressed her need for Jesus. I believe Jesus wants us to be aware of our need of Him and come to Him. He is more than willing to meet our needs and be there for us.

Today we are taught by the world around us, to be independent and self sufficient, but God created us to be dependent on Him for everything. Sometimes we think we know best.
We forget that Jesus wants us to really need Him. All His resources are there for us, but often we miss out because we don’t really see our need of Him.

Maybe you would like today to make a fresh commitment to declare your need of Jesus using the chorus of a hymn by Annie Sherwood Hawks, ‘I need Thee, O I need Thee! Every hour I need Thee; O bless me now my Saviour! I come to Thee.’

Prayer: Father I acknowledge my need of You this day. Forgive me when I have gone my own way. Please lead me forward to know my need of You and my total dependence on You every day. Amen.
