Why are you cast down, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Saviour and my God.
Psalm 42:5, NIV

Elijah had performed mighty works for God – calling down fire on a wet sacrifice and killing the prophets of Baal (1Kings 18:36-40). Then Queen Jezebel declared she would hunt him down and have him killed (1 Kings 19:2). Elijah ran for his life, on and on and on. Finally, he reached the wilderness and sat down and asked that he might die. (1 Kings 19:4).

Elijah fell asleep and an angel awakened him and told him to eat, drink, and sleep. And a second time the angel came and told him to eat because he was going on a long journey i.e. 40 days and 40 nights to Mount Horeb. Elijah came to a cave and then he heard God asking him what he was doing there, and again Elijah repeated what he had said before (verses 9 and 10).

God instructed Elijah to go out, and he heard a great and strong wind, an earthquake, a fire, and finally a still small voice. And God again questioned him, and he provided the way forward for Elijah (1 Kings 19: 15 –17).

This is how our loving Heavenly Father cares for us when we are exhausted, fearful, and at the end of ourselves. He feeds us with His word and waters us with His life-giving Holy Spirit. He gives us rest when we are yoked with Him.

When we draw aside and wait on Him, we hear His still, small voice. He goes ahead and prepares the way for us, smoothing our path and instructing us what to do.
