My Shield from Danger

by Angela Weir

But You, O Lord, are always my shield from danger; You give me victory and restore my courage.
Psalm 3: 3, GNB

One Friday I was driving down to Ellel Grange to teach on a Healing Retreat. I had just got to the place where I needed to turn across the traffic into the drive when my car stopped. I thought I had stalled the engine, so I tried to start it again, but nothing happened. I was stuck in the middle of a busy road!

I realised that I would have to get the car across the road out of the way. Nobody stopped to help me but then, miraculously at that busy time, the road became clear, and I began to turn the steering wheel and move the car towards the drive. It seemed to take on its own momentum and I wondered how I would stop it, but the drive slopes up slightly and the car came to a natural standstill.

Two friends arrived shortly after that and took me up to the Grange and I was able to call the breakdown lorry. The man told me that the cam belt had broken and had that happened half a mile before I would still have been on the motorway where it could have caused a serious accident.

Our house manager at the Grange always puts a bookmark on our beds to welcome us and the Bible verse on mine was ‘But You, O Lord, are always my shield from danger; You give me victory and restore my courage’ (Psalm 3:3). God had truly protected me, and surely the angels were helping me push my car over the road.

As you may imagine, I was feeling a bit shaky but the Lord restored my courage and enabled me to begin teaching on time and with a clear mind.

Prayer: Thank You, Father, that You take such good care of us and keep watch over us in all our comings and goings. And thank You that You can bring peace in turmoil. I am truly grateful. Amen.
