Lot

by Angela Weir

Then Lot chose for himself all the Jordan Valley............and moved his tent as far as Sodom and dwelt there. But the men of Sodom were wicked and exceedingly great sinners against the Lord.
Genesis 13:11-13, Amp

Our younger daughter has recently returned from a cycling trip to Jordan, where, among many wonderful sights, she saw the ‘Pillar of Salt’, or what is reputed to be the pillar that Mrs Lot was turned into when she looked back at the destruction of Sodom (Genesis 19:26).

Lot must have thought that he was making a wise, if selfish, choice when he decided to go into the fertile Jordan valley, as he and his uncle, Abram separated. But it appears that Sodom’s reputation was already well established, so Lot was taking a grave risk by pitching his tent nearby and it ended in disaster for his family.

The ‘world’ seemed very attractive to Lot, as it seems to us on occasions. Paul tells us not to be conformed to the patterns of this world (Romans 12: 2) and John writes: “Do not love or cherish the world or the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in him” (1 John 2: 15). It is easy for us to be seduced by the world and drawn away from God, particularly in the West where materialism is so often the focus.

Most of us are surrounded by hundreds of things we don’t actually need. Maybe it’s time to do a bit of spring-cleaning and refocus on God.

Prayer: Dearest Father, Please forgive me that I sometimes allow myself to be drawn away from You by the seductive things in the world. Thank You for Your wonderful generosity to me but please help me to focus on my actual needs and not my wants. In Jesus name, Amen.
