In the Master’s Hands

For who hath despised the day of small things?
Zechariah 4:10, KJV

The ordinary details of each moment pass almost unnoticed as we rush headlong into the busyness of our days, while all the time God is waiting patiently for us to place the ordinary into His hands, so He can multiply it and turn it into a miracle.

One day, a mother in Israel (like millions of other mothers around the world) prepared lunch for her small son, not realising that before the day was out the details of her son’s actions with his meagre lunch would enter the pages of sacred writ for time and eternity, having passed through the Master’s hands and met the immediate need of 5000 plus hungry people. The overflow from the feast resulted in twelve baskets of leftovers being collected (John 6:5-13).

The obedience and generosity of one small boy were the keys that unlocked that day’s miracle, tapping into the abundance of God. Jesus was among the people, and a child made the most of the opportunity that presented itself in the presence of the ‘King of kings’.

And so it is with us. In God’s sight our ordinary days do not go unnoticed. He’s looking for us to give Him what we have, including the small things. No-one else noticed the small boy handing his lunch over – but God did. And God has noticed you giving what you have, however insignificant you might think it is. Unbeknown to you, the moment you gave in faith you touched the hands of Almighty God, which triggered the miraculous. You may not be fully aware of the extent to which you have blessed others until you get to eternity. But in giving to others, even in the most insignificant of ways, you’ve unwittingly ministered to the Lord Himself ‘and the King shall answer…in as much as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me’ (Matthew 25:40).

The Lord is asking us the same question He asked Moses so long ago. ‘What is that in thine hand?’ (Exodus 4:2). For Moses it was a rod, for Samson the jawbone of a donkey, for David a sling - for a small boy his lunch. Whatever it is - little becomes much when you place it in the Master’s hands. Miraculous moments can be the order of your day!

Prayer: Dear Lord, Please help us to remember that every moment of every day is important to You, and that You desire to fill our days with Your abundance. Help us to give all we have into Your hands, for in so doing we will minister to You and bless others also, in Jesus’ name. Amen
