Go Towards Yourself

by

“Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.”

Genesis 12:1, NIV

The word of God in Genesis 12:1 begins with a powerful command: “Go from your country.” While this is a correct translation, it does not fully capture the original meaning. In Hebrew, God not only tells Abraham to “Go,” but also says: `Lej leja`, which translates as `Go towards yourself. `

In other words, the Lord was telling Abram that he needed to do more than just move from Ur to Canaan. He also had to change his identity. It wasn't only about leaving the land where he lived, but also about leaving behind the person he was before God called him.

Have you ever felt that your current environment is no longer contributing to your growth and is producing a pause in your learning and development?

To become who we are meant to be, we sometimes have to step outside the comfort zones of our old selves. This was certainly true for me.

For years, the Lord repeatedly brought Genesis 12:1 to my attention. He was showing me that I needed to leave Spain. The reason for this was to discover my true self and my life's calling and purpose, which I could not find while in Spain.

One of the reasons I had to leave was the sense of familiarity. Often, our family, friends, and others who have known us for a long time, tend to see us as we were in the past. They struggle to understand that we can change into different people. It can be hard for them to grasp that we may feel called to pursue something significant in our lives.

When we become too familiar with our environment, our thinking and understanding may be limited by our past experiences. This familiarity can restrict our ability to see beyond what we already know. Therefore, it is important to broaden our perspective and explore what is beyond our comfort zone.

The Lord had so much more to reveal to me, particularly regarding my personal growth and the changes I needed to go through to become the woman He intended me to be. God knew that all the resources and support I required to grow and mature would be found in England. Additionally, the people who could mentor and guide me were also in England.

I encourage you to “Go towards yourself” as the Lord instructed Abram to do. Do not be afraid to take the necessary steps to find out who you really are. Follow God’s guidance for your future because it will lead you to your destination and purpose in life.
