Eavesdropping

Listen to what the Midianites are saying, and you will be greatly encouraged. Then you will be eager to attack.
Judges 7:11, NLT

I remember, when I was growing up, we were warned against eavesdropping, because we would hear things that we didn’t want to hear. One quote I found says, “Nothing good was ever learned from eavesdropping.” But our scripture for today caught my attention, because when God told him to eavesdrop, it was to build his faith.

Judges 7:13-14 tells us what he overheard. Gideon crept up just as a man was telling his companion about a dream. The man said, “I had this dream, and in my dream a loaf of barley bread came tumbling down into the Midianite camp. It hit a tent, turned it over, and knocked it flat!” His companion answered, “Your dream can mean only one thing – God has given Gideon son of Joash, the Israelite, victory over Midian and all its allies!”

How amazing is it that the enemy would know the name of the Israelite that God was going to use to defeat them! And it is so much like God that He does things in ways we do not expect.

This story encourages me to listen to what the Lord tells me to listen to. There are many people saying many and conflicting things all around us during this time. We need to keep our ears tuned to God and what He is saying to us.

Prayer: Lord, I hear all kinds of different things and I don’t always know what truth is and what is not truth, but I know You are truth. Help me to listen to You and what You are saying. I ask You to direct me to listen to the things which will build my faith. I put my trust in You afresh today. Amen.
