Don’t Give In To Discouragement!

by Sue Dare

May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.
2 Thessalonians 2:16-17, NIV

Very early in my Christian walk I learnt that discouragement is a powerful weapon of the
enemy and that he delights in wielding it against God’s chosen people, i.e. you and me!
I wrote this poem many years ago while walking through a deep valley experience.

Everything within me wanted to give up and I couldn’t trace the hand of God in the midst of what was happening in and around me. I now know that my experience was not limited to just myself, because many people have since shared similar experiences with me. My prayer is that this poem will speak strength into those of you feeling discouraged.

Discouragement! What a powerful weapon it is, wielded in the hand of our foe.
He thrusts it forth and we yield, under its heavy blow.
Struggling to our feet, feeling bruised and weary, we attempt in our own strength to stand.
How foolish we are. How easily we forget.

Unrelentlessly the blows continue. A disappointment here, a sharp word there,
unrealised dreams, a broken promise, and before we know it…
We’re dragging our feet, hanging our heads and wallowing in self pity.

Our enemy sniggers and rubs his hands together in triumph, “I got another one”, he applauds himself.
With a foot on our head and arms raised in premature victory he pushes down hard.
But suddenly his victim stirs and from a heavy heart, a cry is heard.

“I need You Father; I can’t stand on my own. You alone are the lifter of my head.
You are alone my strong tower and refuge from the foe.
You are the one who revives my soul; who gives my life meaning, who strengthens me in my weakness.
You alone are the one who dispels my darkness and fans the dying embers of hope. I look to you!”

An invisible hand reaches down and grasps the arm of His wounded child.
Pulling him to his feet, He gently lifts his chin. “Fear not, precious child of mine for you never walk alone.
Keep your eyes focussed on me and no weapon formed against you will prevail.
It will not work. It cannot work. Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world.
