Claiming the Moral High Ground

There seems to be a contest in the world these days for moral superiority. Whatever the cause, be it racial inequality, global warming or gender politics, for example, it’s apparently essential for many activists to deride everyone who doesn’t occupy the high ground that they have claimed for themselves.
Of course, there are many well-meaning people seeking to bring change to the wrongs of this troubled world, but there is a growing ideological extremism that is unwilling to even listen to a balanced counter-argument. This is being labelled by many commentators as the “cancel culture” of our times.
In amongst this desire for the moral high ground, Christianity is increasingly seen as an enemy of progressive thinking, promoting bigoted and outdated views, that constrain people’s freedom to express their lives as they wish. Bible-believing Christians, thought of as an irrelevance by many in the world not so long ago, are now frequently targeted as an arch-rival of this ill-defined quest for liberty. It must also be said that even we as Christians can fall into the trap of a proud pharisaical superiority, convinced that our brand of faith stands above others.
But God judges it all so very differently. He sees a deeply broken world, where every human being falls desperately short of His standard of righteousness. For Him there is only one person who has walked this earth who can claim the moral high ground, His Son Jesus Christ, the only One who is a place of true righteousness for all those utterly submitted to Him.
Prayer: Oh Lord, humble my heart that I might know a new dependence on the only One who has existed with absolute goodness. Amen.
