Can These Bones Live?

And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit, who lives in you.
Romans 11:1, NIV

Ezekiel was led by the Spirit of God down to the middle of a valley. There he saw a great number of bones on the valley floor. They were very dry (Ezekiel 37:2). Their bodies had long since perished, and God said to the prophet, “Can these bones live?” (Ezekiel 37:3).  This must have seemed an impossible question to answer. But Ezekiel knew that with God nothing was impossible. “O Sovereign Lord,” he replied. “You alone know.”

I wonder how many people there are walking upon this earth, who are alive to, and hungry for, the things of the flesh, but dead to the awareness of God and His mercy. Because it is only by the Holy Spirit that people can have a relationship with God. Many millions throughout the world are ignorant of this essential fact.

Humanity came alive by the breath of life, breathed into Adam’s lifeless form by God Himself (Genesis 2:7). They had eternal life as yet untainted by the curse of sin. But through rebellion and disobedience they opened the door to death. The door could only be closed by the sacrificed, perfect life of Jesus Christ, so that now all who believe and receive Him may have everlasting life.

The Lord said to Ezekiel, “Prophesy to these bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord … I will put breath into you, and you will come to life ... Then you will know that I am the Lord’” (Ezekiel 37:6).

I believe this same message is for the world today, the millions who have rejected the Lord, who have ignored the warning signs, and who are teetering on the edge of a lost eternity through ignorance, disobedience, or deliberate rejection of the truth.

This is God’s call to those who have turned their backs on His saving grace, that their eyes would be opened, not just that they would see the fullness of life on earth, but that they would enter into that eternal life of glory and union with God through Jesus Christ.

It’s not too late. But the trumpeters are getting ready.

At that time the sign of the Son of man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the son of man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory. He will send his angels with a loud trumpet call and they will gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other’ (Matthew 24:30-31).

And all who call upon the name of the Lord will be saved.
