Seeds of the Kingdom

Awesome

by Ron Scurfield

Do not be terrified by them, for the Lord your God, who is among you, is a great and awesome God.
Deuteronomy 7:21, NIV

Two ladies were flying in a light plane over Australia. They were on holiday with a few other passengers and rather nervous about the flight. Especially so when the plane flew into some violent air turbulence and the beginnings of a storm.

After a while flashes of lightening could be seen through the windows and the turbulence increased. The plane began to shudder violently and the two ladies were becoming increasingly fearful.

One of them, a Christian, suggested they pray about the situation. They bowed their heads in their seats and began to ask the Lord for covering and protection, and that the storm would soon be over.

Before long the plane began to fly steady again.

‘Thank you, Lord.’ The ladies expressed their gratitude and lifted their heads, looking anxiously out of the window. Lightening was still flashing and the clouds looked dark and ominous, but a wonderful sense of peace filled the cabin.

One of the ladies thought she would like to take some pictures of the storm, which still seemed to be raging outside. The views were very spectacular and she was able to take a number of what she thought would be quite dramatic pictures.

In due time the plane landed safely and the ladies returned to their hotel.

Eager to see the pictures she had taken, one of the ladies took them to a chemist’s shop to be developed. They would be ready the following day.

When she called back to collect them the manager seemed reluctant to hand them over without asking a few questions. He wanted to know where the pictures had been taken, and what had been the circumstances surrounding them. He said he had never seen anything like it before.

The lady asked to have a look at the pictures, and one in particular immediately caught her eye. Taken through the plane window it appeared to show the image of a man. He was ‘dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace’ (Revelation 1:13-15).

I know. I’ve seen the pictures.

Prayer: Lord, so often we are not aware of your presence, and yet you are with us constantly. Forgive me that I have acted on my own, in fear or doubt, not trusting you in every situation. I know you will never fail me. Help me to live in constant awareness of your awesome presence, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
