Wells of Salvation

‘Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The LORD, the LORD, is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation.’ With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.
Isaiah 12:2-3, NIV

In the West, most people have the luxury of clean running water on demand, straight from the tap. There’s something wonderful about clear fresh water being readily available, but I wonder how many of us take it for granted and forget to be appreciative. It’s only when the supply is cut off for some reason that we realise what we’re missing. In many places in the world people have to walk long distances to draw water from wells.

In today’s verse Isaiah speaks of drawing water with joy from the wells of salvation. The word translated as salvation here has the meaning of deliverance, help, health and welfare, as well as that of being saved. The Hebrew word is yeshua – the same root word as the name of our Lord and Saviour, Yeshua, Jesus! In Jesus, we have a well of salvation to draw from, that will not only ensure that we are saved for eternity, but will also be the source of life, health, deliverance and help for us in our lives on earth. This well will never run dry and will supply us with everything we need for life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3). What a joy to have such a well to draw from! Are we taking it for granted, or forgetting to draw from it?

Water is vital to life. Man can survive for some considerable time without food, but without water we would soon die. Similarly, without the living water that Jesus promises us, our spiritual lives very quickly become dry and meaningless. In John Chapter 15, where Jesus speaks of being the true vine, He tells us to remain in Him and He will remain in us, and He says: ‘Apart from me you can do nothing’ (John 15:5). We need to be continually receiving living water from Jesus, allowing Him to fill us with His Spirit.

In many countries, collecting water is a vital part of everyday life. Let’s make it a vital part of our daily lives to draw from the well of salvation and to drink the living water that we have in Jesus. As we do that we’ll receive all we need for the abundant life that He came to give us.
