Seeds of the Kingdom

The Safest Place

by Lambert Bariho

For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.
Colossians 3:3, NIV

Nowadays, the newspapers are full of bad news. The issues are scandals, corruption, and terror in different parts of the world. Finding any encouraging and good news has become such a scarcity that we don't even bother to look for it. Waiting for it from the newspapers would be setting ourselves up for disappointment, as the world has become more unsafe, full of insecurities, fear and political uncertainties.

In the midst of all of this, I was drawn to check what would be the safest country in the world. I was confronted with three realities: one is that there’s no agreement, as it depends on those who did the study, their methodology and indicators. The other reality is the safety in question here is not assured safety, but only in comparison to the rest of world. Thirdly, this safety is temporary: no one is sure that terror won’t strike in those safe countries any minute from now.

The good news is that there is an assured safest place! Today's Scripture reminds us that, if we’re in Christ, we can be assured of His security, and thus continue to live with a sense of safety in the midst of all the insecurities and uncertainties of our world today. It reminds us that we have died with Christ but we’re alive in Him (Galatians 2:20). Thus, our life is now hidden with Christ in God. This is as safe as one can ever get. Yes, our nations and the world may be in turmoil and uncertainties, but we can be assured of our security in God. Yes, our mortal bodies may be in danger and will – soon or eventually – die,f but our real life is hidden with Christ in God.

This is the hope that the world is dying to hear. This is the assurance that we people of God should have and communicate to the hurting and confused world. There is a safe place, in Christ, the Prince of Peace. It’s not just safe, but the safest place in the whole universe!

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me that I’m safe in You. Thank You that my life is hidden with Christ in You. Help me to live my days on this earth with that confidence and hope, and communicate it to those around me. In Jesus’ name! Amen.
