Sunshine in Your Soul

by Pam Smith

Your eyes light up your inward being. A pure eye lets sunshine into your soul..
Luke 11.34, LB

When I let my eyes become pure they not only look at the Lord, but into my own soul and I can see my true motives deep within. It’s true that the nearer you come to Jesus, the more you see your own faults. It’s because of His Light.

When you put a ‘straight edge’ against a stick, the more crooked the stick appears. God desires truth in the inward parts. When our soul is full of His light, it gets rid of any darkness lurking there, and when dark thoughts come, the light will chase them away. When a sinful thought comes in, we can ask for forgiveness straight away. This is called ‘walking in the Light’. It helps us to have good fellowship with God and with each other.

How different Jesus is. His motive is pure. His plans are to give us a future and a hope. He gave the thief on the cross a future and a hope on that black day. His plans are for good and not for evil. His motive is to restore all things, to make all things new and to cover our sins with His love. He heals our hearts, cleanses our thoughts, renews our minds and gives us security. He also grows our faith, clothes us with His righteousness, giving us a genuine love for Himself and others, and ‘lets sunshine into our souls’.

Oh what a beautiful heart our God has. We know He can’t look on sin and yet His mercy outweighs His justice. Let’s be honest and open before Him. He knows the secrets of our hearts. He knows us better than we know ourselves, yet He still loves us the same. Psalm 139 says that He even knows what we’re thinking about, and what we’re going to say.

But take courage. Know that every day God is changing us little by little, from one degree of glory into another, to become more like Jesus. The path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day (Proverbs 4.18, RSV).
And one day, we shall be like Him, for we will see him as He is.

Prayer: Lord, This day I’m willing to let you change me to become more like Jesus. Help me to have pure eyes. Motivate me with Your love. Let Your sunshine pour into my soul. Thank You, Father. Amen.
