Stubbing My Toe

by Ruth Hawkey

And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.
1 Corinthians 12 v 26, KJV

A week or two ago, I was cleaning my bedroom floor (not something I do very regularly), when I happened to walk into the foot of my bed which has a hard corner. I didn’t have any shoes on at the time. I thought nothing about it except to notice the intense pain I experienced at that moment and realised that I had ‘stubbed’ my toe.

However, a couple of days later, I realised that I was finding it quite difficult to walk properly without any pain. When I looked at my foot, I saw that three toes were black and blue, as well as the top of the foot being very painful too. The accident to the toes had had a knock-on effect!

Until then, I must confess I hadn’t really appreciated the scripture which talks about ‘every member’ being important to the whole body. However, through that experience, I have come to appreciate much more fully the importance of each member of the Body of Christ within the church where I worship, whether they are the head or the toe, or somewhere in between.

A toe might not seem very important in the scheme of things, but, if we want to walk tall and move forward as a Body, it will pay us to appreciate and care for each other. For me, stubbing my toe was a lesson learned.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You for the Body of Christ, especially those with whom I worship and share friendship and fellowship locally. Help me to really appreciate each person and care for them as I care for my own body. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
