Seeds of the Kingdom

In God’s Hands, Not Our Own

by Philip Asselin

In you, LORD my God, I put my trust.
Psalm 25:1, NIV

If you were to place an artist’s paintbrush in my hands to create a picture, I would produce nothing of value. But in the hands of Van Gogh a masterpiece would be created. If you placed a pen in my hand to write a book, I would produce a novel few people would ever want to read, but in the hands of Charles Dickens a brilliant novel would emerge. If you placed a golf club in my hands and asked me to play a round you would soon get bored and walk off, but in the hands of Jack Nicklaus or Tiger Woods you would be mesmerised by their skill.  I could go on and on, but you get the idea.

It isn’t the object itself, whether it be a paintbrush, pen, golf club, or an activity, a job or a role that we are asked by God to fulfill. It is always the hands of the one that we place it into which counts and makes the difference. So, if I am asked to preach, teach, minister, lead, or serve, I need to remove this from my hands and place it into the hands of God.  Then it is the Lord who will fulfill all He has planned. It is the Lord who will get the glory. It is the Lord who makes the hard tasks easy and the path straight and clear.

Too often we want to do these tasks because we believe we can do them really well in and of ourselves, or we want to refuse them believing we are not skilled enough, clever enough, or good enough. Instead, we must take them to God Himself and ask Him to do them through us for His glory.

We must remember to continue to leave God to do it. We fail to do this too often with our own lives. We declare God is in the driver’s seat of our lives, but then want to take control of the steering wheel because we think we know a better way to go, a short cut, a nicer more scenic route, one that doesn’t contain so many challenges. But God is the best driver of our lives and knows exactly the route we should take.

Maybe as you read this Seed you are being reminded by God to put Him back in charge, and then you can watch in awe at the masterpiece He alone can create.
