God’s Compass

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever.
Hebrews 13:8, NIV

The Scripture in Hebrews 13:8 has been one of the foundation scriptures of my life. While reading this passage of Scripture in Hebrews, I was once again so comforted by this truth – that the Lord is constant, faithful, unchanging, reliable and trustworthy, ALWAYS!

As I was pondering the fact of God’s consistency and steadfastness, God showed me a picture of an old-fashioned compass. A compass will not tell you where you are going, or even exactly how to get there (like a GPS will do). It simply points out where North is and puts into perspective the direction in which you’re facing. The compass needle will continue to point in a northerly direction, no matter how many times you change the direction you’re walking in. Stormy weather and bad satellite signals can’t affect the accuracy of your compass, and it doesn’t run flat and need to be recharged every so often.

Hebrews 1:12 says, ‘But You remain the same, and Your years will never end’. I can rely on the Lord to be today who He proved Himself to be in His Word for thousands of years, from Genesis to Revelation. He’s consistently good, consistently righteous, consistently faithful and kind. There’s nothing about Him that needs to change or improve, because He’s perfect in all His ways. Deuteronomy 32:4 says, ‘He is the Rock; His deeds are perfect. Everything He does is just and fair. He is a faithful God who does no wrong; how just and upright He is!’

It’s so good to know that the Lord is my ‘compass’. He’s given me His Holy Spirit to help me, and His Word as a map for my life – a guideline to ensure my life stays on course. But He’s also given me a free will to choose whether I’ll ignore the compass needle of truth or heed it in order to remain in step with His best plan for my life.

In a constantly changing world, filled with so many uncertainties and inconsistencies, I’m grateful for God’s unchanging nature. He remains the same, yesterday, today and forever. ‘Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows’ (James 1:17).

Prayer: Father, thank You that You haven’t left us as orphans to try and navigate our way alone through life. Thank You for Your Word to guide me and for Your unchanging, steadfast nature. I’m so grateful for who You are to me. I love You, Lord. Amen.
