The Overflow

by Cath Taylor

Jesus said, “I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows).
John 10:10, AMP

God is moving. Not just in your church or in big conferences. God is moving and touching people’s lives every moment of every day. I get SO excited by that! I hungrily want to be part of that…

Being part of seeing God move doesn’t mean we have to be in full-time Christian work or doing a particular “thing” for Him. He is moving and wants to overflow from our lives right now… wherever you are… in the supermarket, in the dentist’s, in your bed at home as you send a text to the person God puts on your heart…

For God to overflow His love and life and hope into this world through us, we first have to be filled. Like a bath that you forget to turn off (yes, I have been guilty of this!), the water just flows over the edges and down into the room below.

What about our lives? Is God filling us with His Spirit and we are drawing close to Him and from that He overflows to the people around us? It’s not even about what we say or do, but just His presence can overflow out of us and impact people.

So what does this overflowing take? It takes spending time with Him. Worshipping Him. Filling the gaps of sin in our lives by repenting and confessing them to stop the leaks. Making the tough choices to forgive and release the dross that would divert the blessings. It’s about sitting our hearts in wonder at the truth of the Word of God that says we are loved and accepted and known by Him and letting it sink into the deeper places of our hearts. It takes being available and expectant for Him to outwork from us in any moment of our day whether we know it or not.

My heart today says “Holy Spirit please fill me afresh with your Spirit. Show me what would block your filling and give me the courage and humility to bring it to your Cross. Then overflow your goodness and your love and life into the people I meet and come across today”.

Then we let Him work and we just keep worshipping Him each moment as we walk, as we sit, as we just remember we are secure and loved by any amazing God. As we dig into Him ourselves, His love overflows out through a smile, through a prayer, through a Scripture, just out from us by His Spirit into this needy world.
