Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
1 Peter 5:7, KJV

When I was a little girl, I temporarily attended Sunday School for a few months. This was during a time when it was ‘fashionable’ for children to attend, so our neighbours’ children attended too. My father would dutifully drop my sisters and I off at the door and then pick us up afterwards. It gave my parents a break, and they also saw it as being beneficial for us. Sometimes our Sunday School teachers would take us into the church service so we could feel part of the congregation. Most of what was said and done was incomprehensible to me, but I enjoyed it, nevertheless, although two younger sisters were not nearly as excited.

Written on the arch, above the altar on that little church, was painted today’s scripture ‘Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you’ (1 Peter 5:7). Over and over I would read these words and wonder what they meant. I knew that the ‘he’ referred to God, but I was not sure what cares were, or what it meant to cast them upon Him. It was not until many years later that I began to understand.

When you look at this scripture in various other bible versions, it helps you to understand the fullness of its meaning. I especially appreciate the Amplified version that reads, ‘casting all your cares [all your anxieties, all your worries, and all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for he cares about you [with deepest affection, and watches over you very carefully]’.

The word ‘cast’ can also be translated as ‘throw’ or ‘pour out’ your cares on Him. God just doesn’t want us to cast ‘some’ of our cares on Him but ‘all’. That means holding nothing back but allowing God to carry the full weight of all that weighs us down and distresses us. We can do this because He cares about us, not just a little bit, but wholeheartedly. Some people believe that God is far too busy to be concerned about our ‘little’ cares, but I would query that belief. He does care, and when asked, reaches out to help and relieve. I encourage you to cast all your cares on Him today.
Perhaps you would like to pray along the following lines.

Prayer: Father God, thank You that You care about me deeply and affectionately and even invite me to cast all my cares on you. Specifically, I want to talk to You about … today (Fill in the blank). In Jesus’ name, Amen.
