Seeds of the Kingdom

Wind and Tide

by Jan Hession

The wind blows wherever it wishes; you hear the sound it makes but you do not know where it comes from or where it is going. It is like that for everyone born of the Spirit.
John 3:8, GNB

Out in a boat on the sea recently, we experienced considerable, uncomfortably rough and turbulent conditions.

It was explained to me by an experienced sailor that the wind was blowing in one direction whilst the tide was flowing in the opposite direction, so that the waves were caused by the conflict between these two strong forces.

Do you sometimes feel your life in this world feels a bit like this?

We live in times where there is considerable turbulence politically, financially, and morally. The tide of popular opinion is flowing against God’s truth in many areas of life.

We read that the wind blows where it will. Jesus is talking about the wind of God, the Holy Spirit. He wants to ‘blow our sails’ where He knows is best. Are we facing Jesus, listening to Him and adjusting our sails, i.e. our lives, opinions and attitudes where He is blowing?

When a boat floats in the water it is pulled by the tide, whichever way it is flowing. If we drift with the tide we can end up in shallow water or even on the rocks. However, if we put up the sails to God’s Spirit, He can take us His way. On His course, blown by His power, we will stay on a safe path and reach His chosen destination for us.

Put up your sails today and face into the warm wind of the Spirit of God and don’t let the tide of human pressure and public opinion cause you to drift on to the rocks or shallow waters. There may sometimes be turbulence, but be empowered by the wind.

How will we recognise the wind of the Spirit? This will be by spending time with Him, worshipping Him, reading his ‘navigational instructions’ in the Bible, and being with others who know Him and are on parallel courses and listening to His Spirit .

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I thank You that you sent Your Holy Spirit to direct us, comfort us and teach us. I know I am often surrounded by opposition to You in the world. Please help me to listen to your voice, recognise You and follow You only. As You stilled the waters on the sea, help me when there is turbulence around me to know Your peace. Amen.
