Jesus welcomed the people, taught them about the Kingdom of God and healed those in need. Luke 9:11

What Do You Want Jesus to Do for You?

by Michael Tang

So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him that knocks, the door will be opened.
Luke 11:9-10, NIV

These two verses of Scripture are frequently quoted when believers come to their leaders for help. But they have become so familiar to people, that they can easily fail to recognise the value and significance of these assuring words of Jesus. ‘Ask, and it will be given’ and similarly, ‘seek, and you will find’.

Jesus was teaching His disciples to pray specifically to get the desired answers. Perhaps, we don’t ask or don’t know what to ask, or even excuse ourselves from being specific by saying that God knows what we need before we ask. Sometimes, we don’t have the faith to believe. But we’re God’s children and He wants to give us good things. Whilst it’s true that God knows before we even ask, He still wants His children to ask.

In Genesis 2:23-24 and 3:7-9, the Israelites were suffering greatly as slaves in the hands of Pharaoh’s guards. God said, “I have seen the misery of my children. I have heard them crying out and have come down to rescue them”. Although God took a while to solve the Israelites’ problem, He nonetheless did rescue them from the stranglehold of Pharaoh and led them to freedom, by demonstrating His love and sovereign power. God said, “I have heard”. God loves each one of you and is always looking and waiting for us to call.

In Mark 10:46-52, blind Bartimaeus was waiting by the road side. He heard that Jesus of Nazareth passing through, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Jesus heard his shout, stopped and turned around, and got His disciples to bring the blind man to Him. Jesus asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?”
Bartimaeus was blind and begging was a means of livelihood. Yet, when Jesus called him, Bartimaeus threw away the cloth he used for holding the gifts he received. His faith in Jesus was great, and he knew if there was one person who could give him his eye-sight back, it was Jesus. Bartimaeus didn’t ask for money. Instead, he asked for his eyesight. Jesus restored his eyesight, and he followed Jesus.

In both cases, they called out to God and were very specific with what help they were looking to God for. In both cases, deliverance and healing came because God heard their cries. Today, what is it that you want God to do for you? Jeremiah 33:3 states, ‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I come with great expectations because I know You’re a great God, the unfathomable God, the ever-living God, the God of Love, the prayer-answering God. I need Your healing touch in my life. Lord, I’m so weak and often succumb to temptations. I ask that You come. Let Your Holy Spirit break every chain of sickness and bondage, and set my spirit free, so I can reconnect with You and receive Your healing touch. I thank You for Your grace and mercy. I thank You for Your promise that, when we ask, we’ll receive, and when we seek, we’ll find. Thank You, Lord, once again for Your love. In Jesus’ name, I ask and pray. Amen.
