Water to Wine

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Matthew 5:6, NIV

Jesus and His disciples were invited to a wedding in Galilee. The wine had run out. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the empty jars with water, then pour some out and take it to the master of the feast.” When the master tasted the water it had been transformed into the finest wine. Not realising where it had come from, he called the bridegroom. “The best wine is normally served first, then the cheaper wine afterwards. But you have saved the best till last” (John 2:2-10).

Jesus took a basic element of life and transformed it into something special. Not just special, but the best! No doubt a new exuberance would have been injected into the party. The ordinary became extraordinary. The presence of the Lord brought transformation.

When Jesus met with the woman of Samaria at the well He said to her, "If you knew the gift of God ... you would have asked Him and He would have given you living water... Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life" (John 4:10-14). Are we thirsty for the living water of God? ‘Until now you have not asked for anything in My name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete’ (John 16:24).

It seems significant that Jesus’ first miracle, at the wedding, involved wine. Was this a pointer towards the time when He would share with His disciples their final meal together, and the wine became the representation of His blood? ‘Then He took a cup, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. This is My blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins’ (Matthew 26:27-28). The shed blood of Christ sealed the covenant of God and opened the way for our everlasting relationship with Him.

‘Let anyone who is thirsty come to Me and drink’(John 7:37). ‘And this is what He promised us - eternal life’ (1 John 2:25).

Prayer: Lord, I’m thirsty for Your presence in my life. I come to Your cross now and lay down before You everything that would hinder me from receiving. Fill me afresh with Your Holy Spirit that I might know Your mercy, Your grace and Your love. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
