Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our ‘God is a consuming fire’.
Hebrews 12:28-29, NIV

When on a mission trip to Taiwan recently we experienced an earthquake. We had just returned to our accommodation one evening when the floor started to move, the chandeliers in the building started to swing violently from side to side, and the iron banisters swayed as if made of rubber. Two members of our group were in a car at the time and it felt to them as if they had been hit by another vehicle. We heard the following day that there had been an earthquake registering 6.1 on the Richter Scale, with the epicentre only 30 kilometres away. Amazingly no damage was apparent. Most of the buildings in that part of the world are built with foundations that can withstand that kind of shaking.

In Hebrews 12, God talks about the shaking that He will bring to the earth. There have been many prophetic words in these days of the shaking which is coming, and which is already taking place, in this nation and in other parts of the world, as God warns us of His judgement on sin and wickedness. There seems to have been an increase in the number of ‘natural’ disasters in recent years – earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, volcanic eruptions – as well as famines and wars. Jesus warns us of these happenings in the last days. The world is also being shaken by a major financial and economic crisis.

What is our response as Christians to these things?

In Hebrews 12:28-29 we are reminded that we are receiving a Kingdom that can never be shaken. Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our ‘God is a consuming fire’. No matter what is going on in the world around us, if our foundation is in Jesus Christ and His Kingdom, we can be completely secure, in the same way as buildings in areas vulnerable to earthquakes can be secure if they have the right foundations. How secure are your foundations?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for the security that comes from knowing You. May Your Kingdom come more in my life, so that my foundations will be solid and unshakable. Amen.
