You, Lord, are a shield for me; you are my glory, you lift my head high.
Psalm 3:3, JB

I find when we’re going through difficult times, the accuser takes the opportunity to try to deflate us, to accuse us and question God’s truth. “Did God really say …?” In verse 1 of Psalm 3, David says, ‘How many enemies I have, how countless those who say of me “there is no salvation for him in God”’. David was constantly surrounded by his enemies and he often cried out to God for help, saying, “Where are You, God?”

The enemy might be saying to you there’s no help or hope for you in God, or that He’s abandoned you, but don’t let your heart agree with the enemy, because, as David went on to say in verse 3, ‘You are a shield for me’. He’s the one who protects us in the middle of these accusations and lies, and He lifts us up out of them. In Psalm 23, David says, ‘You prepare a table for me even as my enemies watch’.

I believe He doesn’t take us out of the situation or stop those thoughts and feelings we experience of His apparent absence, just when we need Him most, because He’s teaching us to trust Him in the middle of it all, to know that He’s our shield and the one who lifts our head up high. Can you see over the heads of the ‘enemies’ in your life to see that God’s there in it all, shielding you and lifting your head, as you look to Him?

We’re not able to overcome in our own strength, but when we’re weak and look to Him for help, then He’s strong on our behalf and will shield us. Verse 6 says, ‘I will not fear the tens of thousands drawn up against me on every side’. See what odds David had against him, but he put his trust in God. Verse 8 says, ‘from the Lord comes deliverance’.

God is for us, and He calls us into a deeper relationship of trust so that we grow in maturity and security in Him. So, let’s stand and declare, “The Lord is a shield for me. He’s my glory and He lifts my head up high”.

Prayer: Father God, thank You for always being there for me even when I can’t see beyond the difficult circumstances of my life. When the ‘enemies’ of accusations and lies are coming against me, help me to know the truth that You’re my shield, my glory and the One who lifts up my head. Amen.
