Think of Me

No doubt, due to the use of social media, the use of post cards has significantly declined in recent years. However, many are still being bought and sent to remind friends and family that the sender, although away from them, is thinking of them and, in many cases, wishing that they were there with them.

When the time comes for us to leave those whom we have enjoyed spending time with, we often say, “Bye. I’ll be thinking of you”, or “Think of me”. The thoughts we have of those we value when apart from them is a true indication of the depth and meaningfulness of that relationship.

Jesus so much wanted us to think of Him after He had gone back to heaven that He left us with a number of what could be called ‘permanent postcards’, things that would help us to think of Him and what He has achieved for us.

He asked that we remember Him in a specific way. The bread and wine of Communion, however it is administered, is a regular reminder of Jesus and what He did for us and the relationship He wants us to enjoy with Him. It is also a reminder that He is thinking of us, that He is preparing a place in heaven for us, and that He is coming back for us because He wants us to be with Him (1 Corinthians 11:23-26, & John 14:1-3).
The cross is also a symbol of all that Jesus has done for us. It helps us to focus on Him and reflect on the sacrifice He made for us, which made it possible for us to come back into the family of God as children of God and to be able to enjoy all the blessings of that relationship (1 Corinthians 1:18).

The Bible itself is full of significant truths which help us to think of Jesus, to remember His life, His work, His teaching, His death, His resurrection and the promise of His return. They are all designed to help us, to encourage us, and to build us up in the faith (2 Timothy 3:16).

In His absence Jesus has given us His Spirit to prompt our thoughts and remind us of Him and His word, and to be our source of strength and comfort while He is away (John 14:26).

As members of his body, His family, we have one another for encouragement, comfort, and challenge, as we grow and develop in our understanding of Jesus. We remind each other of Him and the promises He made. (Hebrews 3:13).

All these things are means by which we are helped to think of our Lord and to remind us of His promise never to leave us or forsake us. In these busy chaotic times, with so much to distract us, may we be able to make time to regularly think of Him. And, by His Spirit, may we become more aware of His presence as, day by day, we walk with Him.
‘Think of him who endured such opposition against himself by sinners, so that you may not grow weary in your souls and give up’ (Hebrews 12:3, NET).

Prayer: Dear Lord, we are so sorry for filling our lives with so much which takes our thoughts off You. Please help us to be more aware of You and responsive to You as, by Your Spirit, You say, “Think of me”. Amen.
