There Is Also a Time to Quit.

by

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens, a time to plant and a time to uproot … a time to tear down and a time to build.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-1, NIV

As we navigate through life, we discover that there is a time for everything, including a time to let go and a time to hold on. This journey is all about discernment.

Many have been taught that quitting makes you weak. As a result, these people may remain engaged far too long in situations, activities, and relationships that do not bring them joy or fulfilment. This situation is less than satisfactory.

These individuals develop a mindset that views quitting as failure. However, that is not necessarily so. Letting go of the wrong thing can lead to finding the right one.

However, it is important to learn to quit strategically. For that reason, we need to evaluate whether the activities or relationships we are involved in add value to our lives, and whether we are learning things that contribute to our growth. Additionally, we should consider whether these activities are helping us move closer to our goals or pushing us further away from them.

It is well known that millionaires leave businesses when they believe they are not achieving the desired results. It does not matter how much effort or money they have already invested in that particular venture. They are willing to embark on a new economic enterprise that is closer to the goal they have in mind.

Sometimes, all we need is the courage to let go of things we have been involved in for a long time and to distance ourselves from unhelpful relationships with people to whom we have become attached.

Other times, the challenge is knowing whether to quit or whether to persist. I believe this is often influenced by the need for personal healing. This was certainly my experience. Before I had my breakthrough in healing, I tended to quit almost every endeavour. In contrast, my husband, Michael, often persisted in pursuing activities or relationships even when it was clear it was time to let them go.

Knowing when to quit is wisdom, not weakness. The key question we should bear in mind is, “Lord, should I quit or should I persevere?”

I encourage you to ask the Lord for the courage to quit that which is not in His plan for your life and to also seek His strength to persevere with the things that will take you toward your future and purpose in life.

The Holy Spirit will always guide us to make the right choice if we are willing to listen to Him and act on what He says to us.
