The Word of God Piercing to the Marrow

by Chris Cherrill

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Hebrews 4:12, ESV

Having read and heard this scripture many times before, it came as a surprise to find the Lord stopping me and asking the question “Do you really know what this means?” As I read it again I realised that I wasn’t sure, and it was the word ‘marrow’ in particular that got my attention.

I knew what marrow was, but I didn’t know what marrow does. So I began a little research and found out that marrow is the very source of blood in our bodies, deep within our bones. It makes the red and white cells which form our blood, and then releases them into our bodies.

Blood is our life source that keeps us alive. It’s vital to our immune system in fighting disease. It heals and delivers life, bringing oxygen to our brain, heart and organs. Without blood we’d die, and without marrow we wouldn’t have blood. After gaining this little bit of biological knowledge I read the scripture again, and this time it all became clear.

The Word of God is alive and active, and when we read it, eat it, chew it and digest it, it gets right down into our bodies, right into the very marrow that produces our blood, the same blood that heals, protects and brings life.

“That’s amazing”, I thought, “When we read the word of God it’s like having a blood transfusion. Our sinful blood is being replaced with the precious blood of Jesus”.
This new blood, which has the Word of God in it, will then flow through our veins, muscles, tissue, organs, skin, minds, soul and spirit, and will bring life. This is the Word of God in action. It’s the reason why Jesus shed His blood for us, so we can be clean and healed, and receive eternal life.

If you’re finding life tough at the moment, whether you’re feeling low, or ill, or you’re having problems with work, family and life, read God’s Word, even if it’s just one verse,. Read it. It was breathed by God Himself, and it will bring you life.

Prayer: Father, thank You that it’s through reading Your Word that I find life. I thank you that Your son, Jesus, died on the cross, that I may receive it life. I thank You for His blood, and that by reading Your word I may receive salvation. Help me this day to read Your truth, and meditate on it day and night, allowing it to penetrate into my marrow. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
