You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
John 8:44, NIV

These are very tough words from Jesus to the religious leaders of His day. They were angry with His teaching, because it contradicted what they had come to believe was true, their truth. It’s fashionable today to advocate the belief that there is no one truth, that each person’s truth is as valid as the next, and that we should all be able to live by our own moral standard, without constraint.

Through His followers, Jesus still steps into our world today, and says that such relativism, (as it’s called), is not God’s truth, and will not be beneficial to us, either corporately or individually. People are just as angry as they were in the time of Jesus that anyone should advocate the existence of absolute truth coming from the One who made us, a belief that seems to restrict the liberty and rights of each person.

In fact, our world today is riddled with deceit, deception, unreality, half-truths and lies, and Jesus tells us that these all have a spiritual origin, the father of lies, the spiritual ruler of all, who is in rebellion to the God of the Bible. We are left wondering whom to trust, in society, in government, in the judiciary and even, sadly, in the Church.

What a comfort it is, in this troubled world, to know that someone walked this earth teaching and modelling absolute truth. The Son of God came as a man to explain the truth of the One who both created us and wants us to know that truth, in order that we might find the joy of inner freedom.
